 The Irish Never Give Up!

Data from 158 countries reveals that once Irish consumers decide to splash the cash in cyberspace, they stubbornly persist in going ahead with the purchase - despite the tiresome checkout process that infuriates shoppers in other countries.

Analytics experts Formisimo number crunched data from Manic Monday (December 1), the biggest day for online Christmas shopping

They found six out of 10 Irish shoppers who put an item in an online shopping basket actually completed the sale. That's top of the league - just ahead of Britain and the US in terms of completed sales and far ahead of most other countries.

German shoppers completed just one in 10 purchases once they reached the checkout process, suggesting they simply lose patience with online form filling and give up.

Across all 158 countries just 26.04pc (less than three in 10) completed checkout.

Once they reached check-out Irish consumers took an average 176 seconds to complete payment and address details.

Shoppers will spend more than €400 on gifts this Christmas, according to retailerArgos.

"Irish shoppers expect to spend a whopping €430 on Christmas presents this year, with 71pc of these shoppers doing so on the high street or town centre," said a spokeswoman.

According to the survey, the most generous shoppers can be found in Dublin, where spend is expected to top €487 on average. Cork shoppers will spend €390, Galway will spend €345 and Limerick will spend €335 on average.
